Clay Wedging

Clay Wedging is the first and one of the most important steps in pottery. Just like kneading dough before baking, wedging conditions the clay, making it smooth, consistent, and ready for forming into beautiful pieces. This process eliminates trapped air bubbles that can cause cracks or explosions during firing, while also ensuring the clay’s moisture content is evenly distributed.

Potters often describe wedging as both a physical and meditative practice. The repetitive motion not only strengthens the clay but also connects the maker with their material. By aligning the clay particles, wedging improves plasticity and makes shaping on the wheel or by hand much easier. For beginners, learning this step properly can mean the difference between fragile, uneven results and strong, professional-quality ceramics.
